NBR vs. PVC vs. TPE
Most affordable mats on Amazon AU, including our featured pick, use NBR (nitrile butadiene rubber) foam — a good balance of cushioning and durability at a reasonable price. TPE (thermoplastic elastomer), used in our alternative pick, is lighter and PVC-free, which matters if you specifically want to avoid PVC, but tends to be slightly thinner and less cushioned for the same price. Standard PVC foam mats, like our budget pick, are usually the thickest and cheapest, at the cost of being heavier to carry and less eco-friendly to dispose of.
Thickness is a trade-off, not a spec to maximise
A thicker mat isn't automatically "better" — past about 10-12mm, a mat starts to feel unstable under a standing balance pose because your foot sinks into the foam.
